Chattooga Overnight Camping

RIVER INFORMATION

The Chattooga River rises at the base of Whitesides Mountain in North Carolina and flows in a southwesterly direction to form the border between South Carolina and Georgia. One of the wildest and most beautiful whitewater rivers in the country, the Chattooga was used as a location for the movie Deliverance.

Section III of the Chattooga is the perfect trip for novices and family groups. Most of the rapids on this section are class 2 and 3, gradually increasing in difficulty as the trip progresses. Section IV of the Chattooga begins where the Section III trip ends. This run covers the steepest section of river currently being run on a commercial basis in the Southeast.

As a free flowing river, water levels on the Chattooga vary with the amount of rainfall each season. The highest water levels and most exciting trips are usually in the spring and early summer. By late summer and fall the water level is usually lower and trips are more relaxed and slower paced.

THE TRIP
Guests are expected to check in at our front desk approximately twenty to thirty minutes before the trip meeting time. This will allow you plenty of time to sign in and change.

NO REFUNDS WILL BE MADE FOR ANYONE ARRIVING LATE, NOR FOR ANYONE WHO IS NOT READY TO GO AT TRIP TIME.

The day begins with a front porch orientation speech by your trip leader. After distribution of rafting gear and transportation to the river, guests and guides then carry all gear, rafts, and equipment down a trail to the water. Your trip gets underway soon after your guides review paddling techniques and safety procedures.
Not all of the time will be spent paddling whitewater. The first day, on Section III will be slower paced and afford plenty of opportunities for relaxing and swimming. At the end of Section III, your personal gear will be waiting at our campsite. Guests are encouraged to swim, hike, or fish (SC or GA fishing license is required) after camp is set. A steak dinner will be prepared at camp.
After bacon and eggs for breakfast the next morning, camp will be struck and your personal gear packed for transportation back to Wildwater Ltd. You will then meet on the beach with other guests taking Wildwater Ltd.’s Section IV trip. This trip is more challenging than the first day, but there are still opportunities to relax and stretch your legs. A rest stop at sixty foot Long Creek Falls, lunch and swimming at Possum Creek, and a leisurely boat tow across Lake Tugaloo to the take-out round out your two day adventure.

Notice: Wildwater Ltd. reserves the right to change put-in and take-out points as necessitated by unusual water levels or conditions of access roads. All trips go, rain or shine.
